EZL’s
EZL’s, also known as Ignition Control Modules, are mainly found in
Mercedes Benz, although they are found in some Porsche and Ferrari
models as well.
We specialize in rebuilding these units, and we are proud to say we
are the only company in the world which has most EZL models in
stock. We have EZL’s that not even Mercedes Benz of North America or
Mercedes Benz of Germany carry. We also have much better prices and
offer a better warranty than Mercedes Benz.

We carry three different types of EZL’s:
Used
Used EZL’s are defined as units that were taken out of working cars.
They work, but no parts have been replaced. We don’t recommend this
option, as we can often rebuild your unit if the problem is in one
bank of the EZL. However, if you decide to purchase a used EZL, we
offer a three month warranty.
Reconditioned
To recondition a unit, we exchange the common components which are
known to fail and test them afterwards to ensure perfect
performance. Reconditioned units come with a one year warranty.
Remanufactured
These are completely remanufactured units. The details of
remanufacturing are undisclosed to those outside of the trade, but
you can rest assured as remanufactured units come with a two year
warranty.
All EZL’s come with a test certificate and a tube of heat paste. We
offer Ignition Coils at wholesale prices. Prices of the EZL’s we
have in stock depend on the model of the vehicle. Call us for
quotes.
Why do they fail?
There are several reasons an EZL may fail.
Age: The computer chips do not last forever. Eventually, they
will all go bad. Some will last 10 years, some will last 100. But
one failure in one component will make the EZL not work properly.
Heat Paste: Temperatures under the hood get very high, which
is very damaging to many electronics. EZL’s will only function up to
110°F. Heat paste is a heat-transferring compound that is used to
mount the EZL in the vehicle. Over the years, the heat paste will
dry out and can no longer transfer the heat. The unit becomes
“cooked” beyond function. In many cases, if this is the cause of
failure, the EZL is no longer rebuildable. The chip that
burns was designed in 1988 and is no longer manufactured. In
electronics, ten years is a lifetime.
Spike: The regular voltage in your car is about 12 Volts
(actually 13.0-13.5). The computers in the car run at smart voltage
(about 2.7-3.5 Volts). If you have a spike in your electronic
system, or any part of the 12 Volt circuit touches any part of the
smart voltage system, damage to the EZL or other components will
occur.
Bad Coil(s): If one or more of the coils is/are bad, the EZL
will be fed too much voltage or amperage and it will burn.
Bad Computer: A bad computer or failure of other components
in the same circuit as the EZL might also be the reason for failure.
Testing and Rebuilding
If you are not sure if your EZL is bad, we can test it for you. It
takes an hour and a half to test the unit and issue a test
certificate. We charge $80/hour so it will cost $120. Please note
that if you have us repair your unit, or if you buy one from us, we
will waive this fee.
If the unit is bad due to an error that we can repair, we can repair
the unit for $499.95 within 48 hours.
If the defect is on the main board, it has to go to Germany. Repair
cost is then $600-$1100, depending on what needs to be replaced.
If Germany can not rebuild the unit, and you do not want to purchase
one from our stock, but you need the core back, there will be a $55
fee assessed for shipping the unit back to you (shipping overseas is
somewhat costly).
NOTE: Not all EZL’s are rebuildable!
Let’s Get Started
Go to the Diagnostic Form tab and print out the form. Fill it out
and send it to us with your unit and a check (payable to 4Mercedes
for the $120 diagnostic fee). For shipping, we recommend a traceable
and insurable method (like UPS or FedEx). We will test the unit
within 24-48 hours and call you with the results. If you decide to
go ahead with the repair, it will be repaired here or sent to
Germany within 24-48 hours. If you have questions, please feel free
to call us.
NOTE:
Other problems in the vehicle will cause an EZL to fail. In order to
make the warranty valid, you MUST change the ignition coils,
use heat paste to mount the unit, and fix any and all
secondary problems in the vehicle. We will include a warranty card
for you to fill out and send back to us with a (copy of) proof of
purchase of the coil(s). We will also include heat paste with the
unit for your convenience. Without performing these steps, you will
surely burn any EZL you put in the vehicle. We will not replace any
unit that you burn due to negligence. |
